Coating Industry

Coating is the largest user of titanium dioxide

Titanium dioxide is the most consumed pigment in the coating industry (around 10% to 35%)

Titanium dioxide in coatings
1, Latex Paint
Latex paint is a kind of water-based paint, which is a new type to obtain by emulsifying the resin with water and adding pigments. Latex paints are used both internally and externally. For external application, it must use rutile TiO2. And for internal application, it mostly uses anatase TiO2 in domestic, but rutile TiO2 at abroad. Acrylic is the most used latex paint for exterior, and phenolic resin is for internal.
2, Anticorrosion Coating
Marine paint is the representative of anticorrosion coating. And the raw materials are generally rutile TiO2 and epoxy resins.
3, Furniture Paint
It is mostly nitro lacquer used for coloring the furniture. Both rutile TiO2 and anatase TiO2 can be used.
4, Traffic Paint (Line Paint)
With the development of road and traffic construction, especially motorway, the amount used of traffic paint is gradually increasing. It mostly uses anatase TiO2 in domestic, but rutile TiO2 at abroad.
5, Container Paint
As an industrial paint, the biggest requirement for container paint is its weatherability. So it generally use imported rutile titanium dioxide.
6, Automotive Coating
Automotive coating is divided into three grades. The best one is car paint, followed by truck and bus paint. Currently, there are very few TiO2 brands that can be used in car paints. Most are imported special rutile titanium dioxide, such as R2310. Domestic rutile titanium dioxide can only occupy the medium and lower grade market of automotive paint.
7, Coil and Iron Coating
Coil coating can be divided into inner layer and surface layer. And the surface layer is divided into primer and finish. The requirements of surface are high and higher for finish. Coil coating generally use rutile TiO2. With low requirements for interior paint, domestic rutile TiO2 and epoxy resins may be used. For surface, typically use polyester and imported rutile TiO2.
8, Powder Coating
Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. It is usually used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating is mainly used for coating of metals, such as household appliances, aluminum extrusions, drum hardware and automobile and bicycle parts. The application is very extensive. Akzo Nobel, the world's largest manufacturer of powder coatings, has already put into operation four powder coating plants in China, and the annual output of powder coatings exceeds 30,000 tons. Powder coatings are classified into different types based on the resins used: epoxy-modified, acrylic, polyester, etc. Most of them use rutile TiO2.
